Eddie Izzard’s Mandela Marathon
Saturday, 8.35pm, SBS One On May 15 last year, comedian Eddie Izzard, 51, set out to run 27 marathons in 27 days as a tribute to Nelson Mandela and the 27 years he spent in prison. With a documentary team in tow, he planned to crisscross South Africa through areas that were milestones in Mandela’s life. They included Mvezo, Qunu, Fort Hare, Johannesburg, Soweto, Pretoria, Rivonia, Cape Town and Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Luck was not with the ambitious Izzard in this first episode. At the end of the third marathon he was carted off to hospital with medical complications caused by rugged terrain, humidity and altitude.
