Fri­day, 9pm, UKTV Set amid the dark low-life of Vic­to­rian Lon­don, this four-part se­ries is based on the novel by Michel Faber. Sugar (Ro­mola Garai, Daniel Deronda, Nicholas Nick­leby) is a strong-willed pros­ti­tute whose af­fair with Wil­liam Rack­ham (Chris O’Dowd, Gul­liver’s Trav­els, Brides­maids), the re­luc­tant heir to a perfume busi­ness, pro­pels her into a dif­fer­ent world. He moves her into Rack­ham House as gov­erness to his daugh­ter So­phie (Isla Watt) whose men­tally ill mother Agnes (Amanda Hale) has re­jected her. It doesn’t end happily. The se­ries re­ceived mixed re­views in Bri­tain but won sev­eral awards.
