The Crimson Petal and the White
Friday, 9pm, UKTV Set amid the dark low-life of Victorian London, this four-part series is based on the novel by Michel Faber. Sugar (Romola Garai, Daniel Deronda, Nicholas Nickleby) is a strong-willed prostitute whose affair with William Rackham (Chris O’Dowd, Gulliver’s Travels, Bridesmaids), the reluctant heir to a perfume business, propels her into a different world. He moves her into Rackham House as governess to his daughter Sophie (Isla Watt) whose mentally ill mother Agnes (Amanda Hale) has rejected her. It doesn’t end happily. The series received mixed reviews in Britain but won several awards.
