The Slap

The Weekend Australian - Review - - Television -

Thursday, 9.30pm, Studio This eight-part series based on the multiaward winning novel by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas debuted on ABC1 in 2011. It’s one of those programs that genuinely reflects the essence of the book (which I have to say irritated me); terrific performances by Jonathan LaPaglia (brother of Anthony), Melissa George, Lex Marinos and Alex Dimitriades bring the story alive. In the days after a guest at a barbecue slaps a child not his own, the tight circle begins to disintegrate as each person reacts. It’s a clever take on relationships within Greek and suburban communities. The series won critical acclaim and an average audience of about 950,000 first time around. This is episode one, a good place to start if you missed it two years ago.
