Sunday, 9.30pm, Studio
Released in 1969, the double album Tommy — about ‘‘ the deaf, dumb and blind kid’’ who’s a pinball wizard — by English group the Who morphed into the first musical rock opera. Composer and guitarist Pete Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey open up in this look at what inspired the album (which sold more than 20 million copies) and its impact on their 40-year career. ‘‘ It was a mirror on what was happening at the time,’’ Townshend says. Archival footage of performances and old interviews plus new material shot this year tell an engaging story about a group that set out to make sense of the universe.
