WITH this year’s Os­cars now pre­dictably and ap­pro­pri­ately dis­trib­uted, I’ve been won­der­ing why 12 Years a Slave was such an un­beat­able favourite for the main award. Great story, great act­ing, of course; but other films were just as good. Look­ing back through the lists, it’s clear that the big­gest cat­e­gory of Os­car-win­ning pic­tures is the in­spi­ra­tional his­tor­i­cal drama. The academy loves noth­ing more than to be in­spired — wit­ness Lawrence of Ara­bia, Char­i­ots of Fire, Pat­ton, Brave­heart, Schindler’s List.
