WITH this year’s Oscars now predictably and appropriately distributed, I’ve been wondering why 12 Years a Slave was such an unbeatable favourite for the main award. Great story, great acting, of course; but other films were just as good. Looking back through the lists, it’s clear that the biggest category of Oscar-winning pictures is the inspirational historical drama. The academy loves nothing more than to be inspired — witness Lawrence of Arabia, Chariots of Fire, Patton, Braveheart, Schindler’s List.
Perhaps the most uplifting Oscar-winner of all was (Friday, 8.30pm, Masterpiece), Richard Attenborough’s epic account of the life of
