Holding the Man (MA15+) Neil Armfield’s film of Tim Conigrave’s memoir about his love affair with John Caleo is a very well acted and often moving journey through the traumatic AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. As the lovers, who meet in high school, Ryan Corr and Craig Stott are excellent (though not entirely convincing as schoolboys), while their parents — played by Anthony LaPaglia, Kerry Fox, Guy Pearce and Tessa de Josselin — provide many moments of truth. Though overlong, the film convincingly captures both a troubled era and a passionate, loving relationship.
