The al­ter­na­tive se­lec­tion from hun­dreds of en­tries to the Archibald and Wynne prizes, the Sa­lon des Re­fuses be­gan in 1992 and has con­tin­ued to dis­play the works re­jected from the main prize ex­hi­bi­tion. Each year the panel of se­lec­tors goes be­hind the scenes of the Art Gallery of NSW to se­lect the works, search­ing for high­qual­ity por­traits and land­scapes that demon­strate ex­per­i­men­ta­tion, hu­mour and wit. He will ap­pear with the Aus­tralian Cham­ber Or­ches­tra as a soloist per­form­ing Bach’s Con­certo for Key­board, con­duct Hin­demith’s The Four Tem­per­a­ments and then in­tro­duce the world pre­miere of his new work, Sonata for Cello and Or­ches­tra, with Aus­tralian cel­list Ti­moVeikko Valve as soloist.
