The alternative selection from hundreds of entries to the Archibald and Wynne prizes, the Salon des Refuses began in 1992 and has continued to display the works rejected from the main prize exhibition. Each year the panel of selectors goes behind the scenes of the Art Gallery of NSW to select the works, searching for highquality portraits and landscapes that demonstrate experimentation, humour and wit.
