Museum of Sydney, Corner of Bridge and Phillip Streets, Sydney. Admission: $5-$10. Inquiries: (02) 9251 5988 or online. Until November 8. Mozart’s Last Symphonies with Richard Tognetti A celebration of Richard Tognetti’s 25th year at the helm of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, this touring program abounds in historical symbolism. Composed in a single summer, Mozart’s final three symphonies reflect not only the culmination of his symphonic genius but also a tumultuous late Enlightenment energy and revolutionary spirit. During his tenure, Tognetti has looked for inventive ways to acknowledge tradition without making any spurious claim to “authenticity”. Such was the case here, with the gentle timbres, direct voicing and limited carrying power of wooden and valveless period wind and brass coupled with relatively sedate ACO strings, pared back with great discipline to a lean, even and unadorned sound. Llewellyn Hall, Building 100, William Herbert Place, Canberra. Tonight, 8pm. Tickets: $46-$109. Bookings: 1800 444 444.
