Pick of the week opera
Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a more exciting film if the new director, the first in the Disney era, had more imposed his considerable imagination on proceedings. Having said that, this seventh instalment of the franchise George Lucas started almost 40 years ago is not just a good Star Wars film but a good film full stop, one that will appeal to a wide audience while also appeasing the diehard fans, especially of the 1977 original, to which it pays almost excessive homage.
Joy The Magic Flute Julie Taymor’s family-friendly abridged production of The Magic Flute returns with elaborate puppetry, starring Taryn Fiebig as Pamina, John Longmuir as Tamino, Samuel Dundas as Papageno and Hannah Dahlenburg as the Queen of the Night.
