Pick of the week

Comedy Showroom Wednesday, 9pm, ABC friends and parents, tries to build an outdoor deck in one afternoon (with Paul Kelly serenading him in support) and makes absurd small talk with other fathers at a neighbourhood kids’ party that seems at once surreal and foreboding. There’s massive potential here for an observational comedy in the dryly cynical Seinfeld vein, as Eddie struggles mightily yet with a strong hint of weary resignation to get with the program of being a partner and parent. Perfect has always been a risk-taking writer and performer, a characteristic readily apparent here: the episode is book-ended by a distasteful yet quite funny park run-in between Eddie and an outraged mum, and the cheerfully gory punchline to the meticulous construction of that deck.
