The seemingly indefatigable Rick Stein returns with the premiere of a rather charming variation on his “Englishman Abroad” format, giving us the inside track on his favourite destinations for a weekend jaunt, starting off in ”the Sleeping Beauty” of France: Bordeaux. “A little bit of what you fancy does you good,” he says. He delights in local foods and, of course, wine. In fact he is seldom seen without a glass in hand, especially at lunch, such that it’s hard to imagine how he copes with his afternoon shooting schedules. But as he says, the local cuisine is an important part of the culture of a place, adding: “Someone once said, ‘A wedge of cheese has as much history as a baroque cathedral’, and I think there’s some truth in that.”
