The Weekend Australian - Review - - Out & About - David Stratton

Hacksaw Ridge (MA15+) Mel Gibson’s first film as director in a decade tells an amazing true story from World War II, that of a conscientious objector who became a hero. In this role, Andrew Garfield gives a fine performance, and there is great support from a mostly Australian cast (Hugo Weaving and Rachel Griffiths as the protagonist’s parents, Teresa Palmer as the nurse he marries, Sam Worthington and Richard Roxburgh as military types). The film is superbly shot by Simon Duggan but — be warned — the battle scenes are extremely graphic. Ultimately, this is a moving and powerful story, handsomely filmed.
