La La Land (M) This delicious, bittersweet original screen musical begins with an amazing sequence in which frustrated commuters on a jammed LA freeway abandon their cars to sing and dance. The rest of the film, wonderfully well directed by 31-year-old Damien Chazelle, recounts the up-and-down love affair of Ryan Gosling’s jazz musician and Emma Stone’s would-be actress. This is definitely one of the year’s 10 best releases. It is a very contemporary story about the clash between art and commerce, the strengths and pitfalls of idealism, and how difficult it is to fulfil your youthful dreams and ambitions.
