Glenn Barkley, Spice Island (2016). Collection Wollongong Art Gallery. Purchased 2016. On display in exhibition New Acquisitions Collection, Wollongong Art Gallery, NSW, until June 4. In the early 17th century, Ole Worm was a selfconfessed collector of oddities. A Danish physician and philosopher, he bought hundreds of scholarly yet eclectic objects — from a miniature shoe carved from a cherry stone, to an Icelandic drinking horn, a stuffed polar bear cub, a shark’s head and even a horse’s jaw entwined with a tree root. He displayed this array in his Temple of the Worm, New Acquisitions Collection.

Earthenware and stoneware, labels by Lyn Havilah, 46cm x 41cm x 41cm
