The Rover Although Aphra Behn’s Rover was written in 1677, its contemporary relevance is maintained through its realistic exploration of power battles between men and women. A gang of exiled cavaliers enjoy Naples at carnival time, led by rakish naval captain Willmore (Toby Schmitz). He falls in love with young Hellena (Nikki Shiels), who has set out to experience love before her brother sends her to a convent. Sue may be a way out of it and they could help each other. She and Sue strike an unorthodox bargain, but is Clare a godsend or a con artist? Kit Brookman’s quirky play was the winner of the 2016 Ensemble Theatre New Writing Commission. Ensemble Theatre, 78 McDougall Street, Sydney. Tonight, 8.15pm. Tickets: $34-$67. Bookings: (02) 9929 0644. Until August 5.
