Mal Meninga by Peter Hud­son The Na­tional Por­trait Gallery this week cel­e­brated its 20th an­niver­sary in the pres­ence of fa­mil­iar faces. Twenty spe­cially com­mis­sioned por­traits of Aus­tralian per­son­al­i­ties have been un­veiled by out­go­ing di­rec­tor An­gus Trum­ble in hon­our of the Can­berra in­sti­tu­tion’s birth­day. Some of the coun­try’s finest artists were matched with lead­ing iden­ti­ties for a new se­ries, which will form part of the per­ma­nent col­lec­tion and will be on dis­play from to­day un­til Fe­bru­ary.

The project rep­re­sents the largest com­mis­sion un­der­taken in the in­sti­tu­tion’s his­tory. The por­trait sub­jects in­clude play­wright Louis Nowra ren­dered by Imants Tillers; Aus­tralian Cham­ber Or­ches­tra leader Richard Tognetti by Louise Hear­man; physi­cist and 2018 Aus­tralian of the Year Michelle Sim­mons by Selina Ou; bal­let supremo Li Cunxin by Jun Chen; and singer Jes­sica Mauboy by David Roset­zky. Karen Quin­lan, for­merly of the Bendigo Art Gallery, was last month ap­pointed to suc­ceed Trum­ble, who did not seek an­other term at the gallery. She will take up her post­ing in De­cem­ber.
