Mal Meninga by Peter Hudson The National Portrait Gallery this week celebrated its 20th anniversary in the presence of familiar faces. Twenty specially commissioned portraits of Australian personalities have been unveiled by outgoing director Angus Trumble in honour of the Canberra institution’s birthday. Some of the country’s finest artists were matched with leading identities for a new series, which will form part of the permanent collection and will be on display from today until February.
The project represents the largest commission undertaken in the institution’s history. The portrait subjects include playwright Louis Nowra rendered by Imants Tillers; Australian Chamber Orchestra leader Richard Tognetti by Louise Hearman; physicist and 2018 Australian of the Year Michelle Simmons by Selina Ou; ballet supremo Li Cunxin by Jun Chen; and singer Jessica Mauboy by David Rosetzky. Karen Quinlan, formerly of the Bendigo Art Gallery, was last month appointed to succeed Trumble, who did not seek another term at the gallery. She will take up her posting in December.
