2005 The 1885 Shiraz I KNOW it’s not inexpensive, and Eight Songs and the like will satisfy the most demanding palates, but at least share a bottle of 2005 The 1885 Shiraz (96 points, $55) with those who love high-flavoured but not hot and jammy Barossa shiraz. It comes from a vineyard tended by six generations of the Schrapel family since it was planted in 1885. It has impeccable balance, length and focus, redolent of blackberry, plum, mint and spice, oak a mere adjunct. The texture and structure are equally impressive, giving the wine a goldplated chance to breeze past 2030. www.peterlehmannwines.com. James Halliday
