EMPLOYER confidence levels in Australia are at record levels, a Hudson survey says. More than 40 per cent of employers expect to increase staff levels in the next quarter (July to September), the survey of 7788 employers shows. About 5 per cent expect to reduce their workforce. Compared to the previous quarter, there has been a net increase of 2.5 per cent on the previous quarter in employment expectation figures (those increasing staff levels minus those decreasing levels).

The labour market remains extremely tight, says Hudson Australia/New Zealand managing director Gary Lazzarotto. ‘‘ This is the sixth consecutive quarterly improvement in employment sentiment across Australia, and it doesn’t look like slowing down.’’

This is a good time to build a company’s employment brand, says Lazzarotto.

‘‘ A strong, well-communicated employment brand can translate into significant competitive advantage, such as attracting good talent, better engagement with current staff and enhanced organisational performance.’’

Employment confidence levels are high in the professional services sector, with 55 per cent of companies showing an intention to recruit more staff. Western Australia recorded the highest level of employer sentiment, with 52 per cent of employers intending to hire.
