■ Post-coma un­re­spon­sive­ness is the new term for per­sis­tent veg­e­ta­tive state ■ It refers to pa­tients who sleep and wake, but re­main ap­par­ently un­aware more than four weeks af­ter emerg­ing from coma ■ Pa­tients with PCU and MRS should be in­cluded in con­ver­sa­tions as they might be aware of them ■ The guide­lines say health work­ers have an obli­ga­tion to work with fam­i­lies to achieve the best care ■ Fam­i­lies should be made to feel wel­come and val­ued in help­ing to care for a rel­a­tive ■ Health work­ers should com­mu­ni­cate well with each other and fam­ily mem­bers on treat­ment goals and progress The guide­lines are open for pub­lic con­sul­ta­tion un­til Septem­ber.
