Cost of maternity

MATERNITY leave hurts career progression, according to 30 per cent of women in a survey of 200 by Talent2.

Despite the need to counter a low birth rate, Australian women have to face the reality when it comes to taking a break. The pain was felt more in the property sector, with 40 per cent saying their career was never the same after a baby.

It’s a Catch 22 situation, says John Banks, director of Talent2.

‘‘ Australians are supposed to be guaranteed they will return to work in the same or similar position as when they left to go on maternity or paternity leave. This might technically be the case. However, more than 20 per cent say that others have progressed their career while they have been on leave, and taken positions they were the most qualified for.’’
