The Wharf, Port of Broome. Up-beat seafood diner with a good wine list and an outdoor courtyard overlooking the port. Slipper lobster, a rare find, is available here.

Club Restaurant, Cable Beach Club Resort, Cable Beach. A fine diner with a good local reputation. Pearl meat is included on the menu. www.cablebeachclub.com.

Matso’s Broome Brewery, 60 Hamersley St. Rightly renowned for its micro-brewed beers and its setting, but the food and service are less inspiring. Try the Smokey Bishop dark lager. www.matsosbroomebrewery.com.au.

The Ice Creamery, Carnarvon Street, Chinatown. The house-made coconut ice cream is a specialty.

Pearl Luggers, 31 Dampier Tce. Regular tours and evening events include pearlmeat tasting. www.pearlluggers.com.au.

Broome’s busy Saturday morning market sells green paw paw, kaffir lime leaves, yam beans and assorted Asian greens. Those in the know get there early. The most popular lines sell out quickly.
