PERCHED in the centre of Sarajevo, the Hotel Michele (Ivana Cankara 27) fails to exude any of that fag end of communism atmosphere that doggedly survives in some hotels in this part of Europe. Small, family-run and tastefully decked out with silk wallpaper, marble and polished timber floors, and what the proprietors enigmatically refer to as ‘‘ antic furniture’’, the Hotel Michele is a surprisingly genteel presence. It offers six self-serviced apartments (Bosnia and Herzegovina’s first), two guestrooms, high-speed wireless internet, satellite television and a seemingly endless supply of free cakes.
And, for the starstruck, you run the chance of creasing the sheets in a bed once slept in by the likes of Richard Gere or Bono. From j125 ($196) a night, with 50 per cent discount for longer stays. More: + 387 33 560 310; www.hotelmichele.ba. James Jeffrey
