Arthri­tis is the big­gest fac­tor lead­ing to joint re­place­ment surgery, ac­count­ing for more than 90 per cent of cases

More than 33,000 knee re­place­ments were per­formed last year, up 5.9 per cent from the year be­fore

Hip re­place­ments were up by 0.9 per cent to nearly 30,500

Last year 3.4 per cent of hip re­place­ments and 3.6 per cent of knee re­place­ments needed to be re­vised within the first five years af­ter the orig­i­nal op­er­a­tion.
