BLUES

Buddy Guy’s Legends, 754 S. Wabash Ave (at 8th Street): Buddy Guy is a Chicago legend and he’s involved in the day-to-day operation here. With a smaller blues club feel, Legends features some of the best local and international bands. It is relocating soon to new premises, although staff have been quick to allay fears things may change. Try the fantastic Monday jam night when just about anyone and everyone gets up to play. Most shows start at 9.30pm. Cover charge: $US10-$US15. www.buddyguys.com. Kingston Mines, 2548 N. Halsted St (between Lincoln and Wrightwood avenues): This club has an unusual set-up with two stages in different rooms; some of the best musicians play nightly. You can get barbecue ribs to go with your beer but the Thai food at P. S. Bangkok (across the road at 2521 N. Halsted St) is wonderful and incredibly cheap. Cover charge: $US12-$US15; students free, SundayWednesday. www.kingstonmines.com. B.L.U.E.S., 2519 N. Halsted St: Known as the other popular Lincoln Park venue, this club is smaller and darker than its neighbour, Kingston Mines. Renowned for its blues karaoke on Sunday afternoons. On Sundays, you can get a free stamp to go across the road to Kingston Mines. www.chicagobluesbar.com.

JAZZ

The Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway (at Lawrence Avenue): This uptown club is moody and atmospheric, and the music just doesn’t get any better in Chicago. Plan to arrive after midnight for a late martini. The venue has a historic connection: Al Capone used to come here. Cover charge: $US4-$US12. www.greenmilljazz.com. Andy’s, 11 E. Hubbard St: This respected River North club has all-ages nights during the week (important if you are under 21). There is a restaurant as well as a bar, and the music is easy listening. Andy’s also offers late-afternoon sets starting at 5pm. Cover charge: $US5-$US10. www.andysjazzclub.com. Pops for Champagne, 601 N. State St: Pops has a reputation for some of the city’s best pianists and vocalists. Its relatively new location in River North continues the club’s tradition of highquality mainstream jazz in a swanky setting. Cover charge: $US10 for jazz club (champagne bar no charge). www.popsforchampagne.com. Jennifer Conley
