DENTISTRY graduates get the highest starting salaries, according to the latest Australian Graduate Survey. The top three positions in starting salaries have been occupied by dentistry, optometry and medicine for the past five years. The next few ranks for starting salaries belong to graduates in earth sciences, engineering, education, mathematics, law, social work, and computer sciences. Social sciences, humanities and art and design are in the bottom rungs.

The median starting salary for graduates under 25 was $43,000 in 2007— but dentistry in professional practice $74,000, optometry $60,000, medicine $52,000, social sciences $36,000, humanities $35,000, and art and design in professional practice $29,400. About 84.5 per cent of graduates were in full-time employment within four months of competing their degrees in 2007, the survey shows. This figure was 82.4 per cent a year ago.
