FROM THE REGION

2006 Derwent Estate Riesling, Reserve Pinot Noir DURING four days in Tasmania we tasted several hundred wines: the first two in the Southern Tasmania regional showcase set the scene for what was to come. Pat and Andrew Hanigan’s Derwent Estate has a prime 10ha northfacing vineyard overlooking the Derwent River, with the wines made by Julian Alcorso at Winemaking Tasmania. The 2006 Riesling (93 points, $22) has developed beautifully over the past 12 months, with apple and lime juice flavours swelling on the mid-palate before a cleansing thrust of acidity on the finish. The 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir (94 points, $37) has great colour, with deliciously pure and fine plum and black cherry fruit and a well-balanced finish. www.derwentestate.com.au. James Halliday
