2006 Der­went Es­tate Ries­ling, Re­serve Pinot Noir DUR­ING four days in Tas­ma­nia we tasted sev­eral hun­dred wines: the first two in the South­ern Tas­ma­nia re­gional show­case set the scene for what was to come. Pat and Andrew Hani­gan’s Der­went Es­tate has a prime 10ha north­fac­ing vine­yard over­look­ing the Der­went River, with the wines made by Ju­lian Al­corso at Wine­mak­ing Tas­ma­nia. The 2006 Ries­ling (93 points, $22) has de­vel­oped beau­ti­fully over the past 12 months, with ap­ple and lime juice flavours swelling on the mid-palate be­fore a cleans­ing thrust of acid­ity on the fin­ish. The 2006 Re­serve Pinot Noir (94 points, $37) has great colour, with de­li­ciously pure and fine plum and black cherry fruit and a well-bal­anced fin­ish. www.der­wen­tes­ James Halliday
