2006 Allies Stone Axe Shiraz ALLIES also makes a Heathcote shiraz to accompany the Peninsula portfolio. The 2006 Stone Axe Shiraz ($24, 95 points, 200 cases) comes from Glen and Cathy Rathjens’ Stone Axe vineyard in Colbinabbin and is grown organically. The theme is once again low alcohol (13.2 per cent), open fermentation and 10 months in French oak. It is a vivid crimsonpurple, wondrously fragrant, with an elegant, medium-bodied palate of spicy black fruits thrusting through to a bright finish. There is no reason to suppose it will tire before 2026. Retail stockists include the Prince Wine Store and Randall’s in Melbourne, and Five Way Cellars in Sydney. The Melbourne restaurant list is a who’s who of the best in that city, plus Aria and De Vine in Sydney. It will come as no surprise to find there are no direct sales. James Halliday
