2006 Al­lies Stone Axe Shi­raz AL­LIES also makes a Heath­cote shi­raz to ac­com­pany the Penin­sula port­fo­lio. The 2006 Stone Axe Shi­raz ($24, 95 points, 200 cases) comes from Glen and Cathy Rath­jens’ Stone Axe vine­yard in Col­binab­bin and is grown or­gan­i­cally. The theme is once again low al­co­hol (13.2 per cent), open fer­men­ta­tion and 10 months in French oak. It is a vivid crim­son­pur­ple, won­drously fra­grant, with an el­e­gant, medium-bod­ied palate of spicy black fruits thrust­ing through to a bright fin­ish. There is no rea­son to sup­pose it will tire be­fore 2026. Re­tail stock­ists in­clude the Prince Wine Store and Ran­dall’s in Melbourne, and Five Way Cel­lars in Syd­ney. The Melbourne restau­rant list is a who’s who of the best in that city, plus Aria and De Vine in Syd­ney. It will come as no sur­prise to find there are no di­rect sales. James Halliday
