2006 Boireann Shiraz Viognier THE 2006 Boireann Shiraz Viognier ($50, 95 points) is vivid crimson-purple, as befits the blend of 95 per cent shiraz and 5 per cent viognier. It has layer upon layer of vibrant fruit, lifted and enlivened by the viognier, and ripe tannins that, while relatively soft, will help carry the wine for 20 years or more. Its alcohol of 13.8 per cent is a further guarantee of longevity, even though it is almost inevitable that few purchasers will be able to resist its charms for more than a few years. The winery cellar door at 26 Donnellys Castle Rd, The Summit, Queensland, is open seven days, 10am to 4pm, but it’s wise to phone to check which wines are available. (07) 4683 2194.
