Kand and in Australian television series, including AllSaints . Smith lives in Sydney and travels often to Los Angeles and locations such as Romania where he spent four months filming in 2004. Last year he honeymooned in the US and eastern Europe. www.bluetonguefilms.com.

506070, SYDNEY

I ALWAYS PACK

IERAN DarcySmith is director of Blue Tongue Films, with friends Nash and Joel Edgerton. He has also appeared in local films September , TheCave Two Hands

MUSEE D’ORSAY, PARIS; NATIONAL GALLERY, CANBERRA

Musee d’Orsay is exciting, as all the big guns— Monet, van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin— are here in a close-up, relaxed setting. I also love the National Gallery and really enjoyed the Italian Classics collection a few years ago. www.musee-orsay.fr; www.nga.gov.au. Almost everything that my wife and I have is second-hand and if we need something specific we’ll generally hit Sydney’s retro stores. This one in Annandale, in the inner west, is always a good place to start. www.506070.com.au.

HVAR HARBOUR, CROATIA

There’s a tiny hole-in-the-wall delicatessen in Hvar, Croatia. Imagine fresh local cheeses, prosciutto off the bone, local wines and fish fresh from the harbour. I could spend all day shooting the breeze with the owner. There are no street names but the deli is dead easy to find in the main square of Hvar by the church and opposite the fruit market.

THE ASTRA HOTEL, SARAJEVO

We visited Sarajevo on our honeymoon and found a crazy, surreal but wonderful city. It was cold and rainy, and we were shacked up at this hotel in an enormous room overlooking a wild snapshot of Sarajevo life. We ducked out as often as possible to ramble and eat and simply drink up the spirit of the place. www.hotel-astra.com.ba.

FREEMANS, NEW YORK

Freemans Restaurant in Manhattan came highly recommended to us and with good reason. It’s probably the best meal I’ve eaten but be prepared to wait for a table. www.freemansrestaurant.com.

DESERT, CALIFORNIA

I love the desert outside Los Angeles. There’s something about deserts and harsh, wide open spaces that seems to reset something within me. My favourite road runs from Broken Hill to Adelaide but the North American desert feels so mythical, dangerous and alluring. I’d love to live there for a spell. www.visitcalifornia.com.

OLD QUARTER, BUCHAREST

Visit the historic quarter and poke through the second-hand stores (anywhere around Lipscani Str, off Boulevard L. C. Bratianu). There is nothing fancy or contrived here; just really old shops that have been trading in knick-knacks for centuries. Pause for a coffee at the Cafe Amsterdam, 6 Covaci Str; www.romaniatourism.com/bucharest. For the plane: books, surfing magazines, a notepad and pen, earplugs, extra water. In general: selected cameras and lenses, the right power adaptors, my Mac laptop. Sharon Fowler
