Tamar Ridge Research Series RICHARD Smart and Andrew Pirie are respectively the consultant viticulturist and chief winemaker for Tamar Ridge, their skills overlapping in a separate pilot winery. Added input comes from three PhD students and funding by a $1.8 million government research and development grant. The pilot winery has released a 2007 Tamar Ridge Research Series 83-1 Viognier (94 points) and a 2007 Research Series 81-1 Albarino (91 points), the first of either variety in Tasmania ($28.30 each). The viognier has true varietal character and the palate has the vibrancy and thrust often lacking. The albarino is bright, light straw-green, with exceptional intensity to the citrus, spice and pear flavours. Limited mainland distribution through Fine Wine Partners. James Halliday
