IT’S a big beer, 8.8 per cent al­co­hol, but a tiny batch (just 400 cases). Grand Cru is the first sea­sonal beer from Murray’s Craft Brew­ing, based at the Pub With No Beer at Tay­lors Arm (pop­u­la­tion 50) on the north­ern coast of NSW. It’s de­scribed as a ‘‘ so­phis­ti­cated, out-there beer’’, a hy­brid of the Bel­gian trip­pel and golden strong ale styles. ‘‘ Hints of ba­nana and bub­blegum,’’ ac­cord­ing to the brewer. The au­tumn spe­cial is in 330ml bot­tles, mak­ing it more ac­ces­si­ble to the curious beer drinker. If you need any more en­cour­age­ment, it struck gold at this year’s Syd­ney Royal Beer Com­pe­ti­tion.
