A SWELL TIME FOR ALL
The northern PNG swell season is monsoonal, from November to April.
You’re surfing mostly over coral reefs; no place for learners.
There are no surf shops; bring your own boards, booties and equipment.
Wave conditions can be fickle; don’t expect perfection in a three-day stay.
Hazards include sunburn, infected coral cuts and insect bites.
Pack light; there’s a 15kg weight limit on local flights.
The surf management plan quota may sit uneasily with some visitors, but respect it. This is how PNG surfers are trying to share and protect these breaks for themselves and visitors. John Borthwick
