Langmeil Freedom Barossa Valley Shiraz 2006 THE 2006 Freedom Shiraz (96 points, $100) is an eloquent expression of its heritage as well as some good fortune. The vintage was an unambiguously good one in South Australia (and the Barossa) but rain did cause problems in the first week of April. The Freedom was picked on March 29, beating the rain, but the fermenters are open to the air and sky alike. Hastily borrowed tarpaulins saved the day for a wine crammed with masses of blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate, its structure underwriting a 30-year minimum future. www.langmeilwin James Halliday
