Pleasure palace: Guestroom at Chateau d’Ouchy AS one would expect in a city that runs a renowned hotel school, Lausanne has some grand accommodation. With only 50 rooms, Chateau d’Ouchy, an old castle beside the lake, provides more intimate lodgings. The guestrooms are comfortably spacious, the showers are huge and the internet connection is free. Part of the hotel is a protected monument and some areas retain an ambience of old Europe, with dark-wood wainscotting and royal-blue carpets imprinted with fleurs-de-lis, while other areas have been modernised. Some rooms are stark, all white, with no pictures or decoration and no sense of place, although the lake and mountain views are stunning. And in the morning you can hear the horns of ferries departing for Evian, Geneva, Montreux and other ports along Lake Geneva. Garry Marchant Chateau d’Ouchy is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. More:; www.chateau
