THINGS are much more down­home at QM2’s Golden Lion pub, a typ­i­cal Bri­tish tav­ern with beer on tap and a lunch menu that in­cludes bangers and mash with onion gravy, fish and chips (slosh your own malt vine­gar) and plough­man’s plat­ters with the oblig­a­tory Branston pickle.

The pub con­cept is also found aboard sis­ter ships Queen Vic­to­ria and Queen El­iz­a­beth, and it might sound a tad corny but the at­mos­phere is fun, the trivia quizzes dan­ger­ously com­pet­i­tive, and some days a stodgy snack seems just the right an­ti­dote to all that fine din­ing.
