HIKING boots and a cosy jacket are de rigueur in winter at Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain Lodge, where a variety of tracks wrap the grounds like a blanket. Most are little more than a meander, including the 1km Enchanted Stroll or the 2km King Billy Track, but all weave spectacular paths through buttongrass, tea-tree, eucalypt and mossy myrtle. Wombats, wallabies and echidnas are familiar sights and, for the lucky few walkers, platypus may surface as you pass their icy streams. Tour guides are also available to give lodge guests extra insights into this natural wonderland. More: cradlemountainlodge.com.au.
