The Most Beautiful Villages of Ireland Christopher Fitz-Simon, Thames & Hudson, $35 IT’s a big call to pick the prettiest villages in Ireland but Thames & Hudson has had much success with the formula in large-format books; this is a compact re-release of Christopher Fitz-Simon’s 2000 compilation. I guess not much changes in the Irish countryside, so perhaps little updating was required. There is a sense of timelessness to it — the pubs, the churches, the thatched cottages, the row houses with football flags flying — and an overwhelming sense of well-watered greenery. Despite Ireland’s economic woes, what we see here are tidy and flourishing settlements proud of their heritage. The Art Guide: NewYork Morgan Falconer, Thames & Hudson, $35 IF you want to build your NYC visit around an itinerary of mustsee art, this well-researched specialist guidebook is just the ticket. Art critic and historian Morgan Falconer divides the contents into genres and the index enables searches by artist as well as style. Heincludes chapters devoted to the city’s best-known art figures, and user-friendly maps ensure easy planning.
