FOOD De­tec­tive’s bak­ing skills are not so hot: cakes that turn out like pikelets, quiches with fill­ings mem­o­rable only for their ab­sence (usu­ally to be found in a pool at the bot­tom of the oven). So when Donna Hay claimed her new packet mix cakes, brown­ies and mac­arons were fool­proof, De­tec­tive thought she’d be the best judge of that. Rolling up her sleeves in an­tic­i­pa­tion of a lengthy tus­sle with Hay’s new Molten Chocolate Chunk Brownie mix, De­tec­tive com­bined melted but­ter and a cou­ple of eggs with the pre-mix be­fore bak­ing. Five min­utes’ work at most. The re­sult? A per­fectly pro­por­tioned, rich and moist treat that had Mr De­tec­tive gob­s­macked at such an un­ex­pected de­vel­op­ment.
