DE­TEC­TIVE re­alises that restau­rants must keep seats full to make a crust and need ta­bles back by a cer­tain time to ac­com­mo­date the next sitting. But dur­ing a re­cent din­ner with friends in Syd­ney, De­tec­tive’s party was re­minded no less than 10 times by wait­staff dur­ing the meal that the ta­ble must be free by 8.15pm (this was af­ter a chase-up phone call at 6.35pm for the 6.30pm book­ing). De­tec­tive’s group had ev­ery in­ten­tion of leav­ing on time, and did so, but not with­out a nasty af­ter­taste that had noth­ing to do with the food.
