Entries are now open for T&I’S annual travel photography contest with Abercrombie & Kent

The Weekend Australian - Travel - - Travel & Indulgence - MERRY KIRKWOOD

TIME to scroll through your archive to find your most creative holiday images. Our annual photography contest, in association with international tour operator Abercrombie & Kent, starts this weekend.

Each year, to raise awareness and funds for A&K’s Philanthropy projects, The Weekend Australian encourages readers to share special moments from their travels.

The theme for 2011 is: Every Journey Tells a Story.

There are no restrictions regarding destinations, scope or subject matter within the contest theme. Your photograph could depict a particularly colourful festival, a majestic panorama, a vibrant cityscape or the small but telling cultural elements that define a destination.

The contest, in its fifth consecutive year, is judged by a panel — including T&I editor Susan Kurosawa, senior T&I design and pictorial staff, and Sujata Raman, managing director of A&K Australia — that will pick the winner and runner-up.

For the first time, readers will be able to have their say in a side competition running during the first half of November. A shortlist of the 20 best photographs will be displayed on A&K’s Australian site and readers will be able to select their favourite and then explain the reasons for their choice in 25 words or less.

The photographer of the winning image will score a sevennight luxury A&K safari for two in Kenya and Tanzania.

The winner and a partner or friend will stay at two of the region’s leading tented camps — Sanctuary Kusini in the epic Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, and Sanctuary Olonana in Kenya’s famous Masai Mara.

The winner will also receive one night’s accommodation in Arusha, the gateway to northern Tanzania’s game parks, and day use of a room at a Nairobi hotel before flight connections.

The prize includes gameviewing in open four-wheel-drive vehicles with expert guides and an excellent chance of spotting the big five — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo. All meals, selected drinks, game drives and park fees are included on safari, plus airport transfers and domestic flights. The main prize is valued at about $16,500.

The runner-up and the winner of the readers’ choice section will both receive a $1000 A&K voucher.

The reader whose vote for the most popular readers’ choice photograph is deemed exceptionally interesting will win quality wine valued at $500.

Entries for the photography competition open today and will be accepted until October 29.

The readers’ choice display and competition will run until November 18.

The winning photograph as well as the runner-up and the winner in the readers’ choice category will feature on the cover of T&I on the weekend of December 3-4.
