SOMtum, the spicy green Thai papaya salad, can be found on street carts all over Bangkok. But it’s hard to go past Hai Som Tum on Convent Road (opposite Molly Malone’s pub) in the city’s financial district. This bare-bones shopfront — laminate tables and fluoro lighting with overhead fans offering some respite from the heat outdoors — serves every conceivable variation of the famous salad for a ridiculous 30 to 45 baht (about $1-$1.50) a plate. If there’s a better-value — or tastier — dish anywhere, I’d like to meet it. More: 2/4-5 Convent Rd, Bangkok (near Silom Road).
