TALES of Laos is an occasional four-day offering, from Bangkok to Vientiane and back, aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, with one-night stays (and breakfasts) at the Thai capital’s legendary Mandarin Oriental Hotel thrown in before and after the journey. This glamorous Orient-express sister train usually runs between Singapore and Bangkok but its extension itineraries, under the Chronicles of South-east Asia banner, are more leisurely in feel (some are as long as seven days), with myriad stops and escorted touring. In 2012, the first Tales of Laos departure is January 22. More: orient-ex
