THE Lob­ster Place at New York’s Chelsea Mar­ket is renowned for its crus­tacean trea­sures, but I am not here for the pricey Jonah crab claws or the Prince Ed­ward Is­land mus­sels. I make a bee­line for the row of tureens perched along­side the store’s sushi bar, which con­tain a va­ri­ety of steam­ing soups. There’s shrimp, black bean and ba­con broth or scal­lop or ba­con chow­der, but the Man­hat­tan clam chow­der wins out, and at $US3.50 for a small serve this rich and vel­vety con­coc­tion is the tasti­est of bar­gains.
