AMANKILA in east Bali has been cel­e­brat­ing its 20th birthday this year and the re­sort has re­leased a book­let that looks back on the past two decades. Aside from the in­sight­ful observations about the ge­n­e­sis of the prop­erty from Aman­re­sorts’ founder Adrian Zecha and ar­chi­tect Ed Tut­tle, it’s the sto­ries and pho­tos of long-term staff that most sum up this clifftop re­treat. Many have been on board since the 1992 open­ing, such as re­cep­tion­ists Artha and Mur­dewi, while oth­ers, in­clud­ing bar­man Nen­gah (pic­tured), have clocked up more than a decade’s ser­vice. Like most Amankila staff, Nen­gah lives in a nearby vil­lage and has other cre­ative skills — in his case, he’s a top-class tra­di­tional drum­mer. More: aman­re­sorts.com
