RAFFLEShas launched a champagne sling, the 1887, inspired by the original Singapore sling. The new version has a base of Billecart-Salmon champagne and is also available at the hotel’s sister properties worldwide. The first sling was mixed in 1915 by bar captain Ngiam Tong Boon, whocreated a legend from gin, sweet and dry vermouth, pineapple juice, egg white and Angostura bitters. Strong? Well, in 1931, Ambrose Pratt wrote in his book Magical Malaya, ‘‘The first glass [of gin sling] makes the whole world seem as roseate as its owncrystal pinkness. The second is a siesta. The third is a knock-out and will reduce the proudest spine to an invertebrate condition.’’
