FOUNDED by Australian Glen Moroney in 1987, the company chartered vessels from Avalon Waterways and in 2007 announced it would build its own fleet. Ships: Scenic Sapphire and Emerald launched in 2008, Scenic Diamond and Ruby in 2009, Scenic Pearl last year and the 169-passenger Scenic Crystal had its maiden voyage this year. Scenic Jewel, a sister ‘‘space-ship’’ to Scenic Crystal, will join the fleet next year. Activities: Electronically assisted bicycles and Nordic walking sticks are provided. All ships have a fitness centre and Scenic Crystal has a walking track on its sun deck, as well as a giant chessboard. Unique feature: Scenic Crystal has private outside balconies that can be converted into weatherproof glass-enclosed sun lounges at the press of a button. These sun lounges are going to be retrofitted on the fleet for next year, except on the Scenic Emerald. Attractions for Australians: All-inclusive in 2013, with complimentary alcohol on all ships. There is a butler for every cabin and optional in-room dining. Airport transfers, gratuities and shore tours are included. Sample 2013 cruise: A 15-day voyage from Amsterdam to Basel on April 3. From $6695 a person twin-share. More: scenictours.com.au.
