THE Shangri-La Hotel Singapore’s classic 158-room Garden Wing has a fresh new look. Originally opened in the late 1970s and festooned with half-moon, bougainvillea-draped balconies, the wing quickly became a favourite stopover for Australian travellers, who enjoyed the cool green of this urban resort. Today, the 6ha gardens, marked by towering tropical palms, tumbling waterfalls and dainty orchids, are well established and provide inspiration for the smartly refurbished accommodation, where botanical prints and rugs woven with floral motifs set the tone. Each of the light, airy and supremely comfortable guestrooms features a marble bathroom, free WiFi and a large balcony overlooking the gardens or swimming pool (the three Premier category suites include an outdoor jacuzzi and barbecue). A welcoming pot of green tea, daily tai chi demonstrations and free shuttle to the central shopping hub of Orchard Road enhance the resort mood. The smart Waterfall Garden Cafe has al fresco poolside tables and a Mediterranean menu. Weekend Escapade packages (valid to December 31) from $S370 ($296) a night include breakfast and 4pm checkout. More: 1800 222 448; shangri-la.com.
