THE Shangri-La Ho­tel Sin­ga­pore’s clas­sic 158-room Gar­den Wing has a fresh new look. Orig­i­nally opened in the late 1970s and fes­tooned with half-moon, bougainvil­lea-draped bal­conies, the wing quickly be­came a favourite stopover for Aus­tralian trav­ellers, who en­joyed the cool green of this ur­ban re­sort. To­day, the 6ha gar­dens, marked by tow­er­ing trop­i­cal palms, tum­bling wa­ter­falls and dainty or­chids, are well es­tab­lished and pro­vide in­spi­ra­tion for the smartly re­fur­bished ac­com­mo­da­tion, where botan­i­cal prints and rugs wo­ven with flo­ral mo­tifs set the tone. Each of the light, airy and supremely com­fort­able gue­strooms fea­tures a mar­ble bath­room, free WiFi and a large bal­cony over­look­ing the gar­dens or swim­ming pool (the three Premier cat­e­gory suites in­clude an out­door jacuzzi and bar­be­cue). A wel­com­ing pot of green tea, daily tai chi demon­stra­tions and free shut­tle to the cen­tral shop­ping hub of Or­chard Road en­hance the re­sort mood. The smart Wa­ter­fall Gar­den Cafe has al fresco pool­side tables and a Mediter­ranean menu.
