THE historic Pilots Cottage Museum, in a building that dates back to 1880 and operated by the Kiama & District Historical Society, has an exhibition devoted to Charmian Clift. The local celebrity grew up in Kiama, on the NSWsouth coast amid wild beaches and valleys, and went on to become an acclaimed journalist and Miles Franklin Award-winning author (her first poem, titled Kiama’s Blowhole, was published in a Sydney newspaper when she was eight years old). Many of her books were in collaboration with husband George Johnston (pictured above with Clift in 1964). The collection incudes mementoes from Clift’s childhood, letters, memorabilia and her favourite typewriter. Open 11am-3pm, Fridays to Mondays. More: kiama.com.au; kiamamuseum.com.
