THE QT Sydney hotel has launched with a bang in the CBD, already drawing accolades for Robert Marchetti’s Gowings Bar & Grill and the funky fitout of its 200 spacious guestrooms within the heritage makeover of the Gowings department store and upper levels of the State Theatre. It’s all about the unexpected nudge-wink details here, from bowler-hat light fittings and cabinets filled with curvy coloured glassware to the sexy textures of soft furnishings and gleaming staff who look as if they’ve freshly popped from hair and makeup sessions (so-called directors of chaos are in charge of guest relations). SpaQ is a haven for personally tailored treatments and its salons feature original tiles and ceilings. Even the elevators are quirky — themed music plays according to the number of passengers ( Just the Two of Us or Are You Lonesome Tonight? are among the mix). A less-touted feature is Parlour Lane on Market Street level for pre-theatre dinner from 4pm to 8pm and a Camparibased Negroni menu during the aperitivo hours from 5pm to 7pm. Go for a weekend package with choice of one dinner for two or breakfasts each morning or barbershop shave and one-hour spa treatment at spaQ. Valid to January 31; from $325 a night (minimum two nights). More: (02) 8262 0000; qtsydney.com.au.
