Len Evans (57 Union Street, $29.95) ‘‘TO make the most of the time left to you, you must start by calculating your future capacity. One bottle a day is 365 bottles a year. If your life expectancy is another 30 years, there are only 10,000-odd bottles ahead of you.’’ Such was the wisdom of wine legend Len Evans, an excellent raconteur who had begun work on a manuscript, ‘‘an anecdotal ramble through a life devoted to the production, promotion and drinking of wine’’, which his family completed after his death in 2006. They added a chapter none could have anticipated — eulogies from highprofile friends delivered at Evans’s ‘‘bloody good sendoff’’ at Tower Estate in the Hunter Valley, NSW. ‘‘He would have been pleased,’’ says daughter Sally Evans. ‘‘And he would be very pleased to now have all of his books finished.’’ As will those keen to find out more about one of the most influential, and wellloved, figures in Australian wine.
